The Beat

After about two months of back -to-back twists, I finally unraveled my hair extensions and unveiled my underlying growth. Unlike hair straightening, twists give a heat-free stretch without fully eliminating the kinks, so I much prefer this method of stretching.

I’d decided to take my extensions out last Thursday night because I’d made plans for the weekend and knew it would be virtually impossible to squeeze in anything else. It was about 1:00am when my Mum and I were finally done and I was faced with a full head of thick natural hair. I couldn’t fathom the thought of sectioning my hair into my signature flat twists and so I decided I’d pull it up into a huge bun and pin the tips back into my bun. A little like a donut, just… without the donut.

My colleague, Michael, thinks my hair-do looks a lot like a drum and physically had to restrain himself from tapping a beat on the crown of my head whenever he passed by. Nevertheless, been rocking and loving the style I now call “The Beat” all week.

Ps: I need to work on my hair line. I think the braids (and twists) might finally be taking their toll on it.

Renata

I have my own style. It’s specific to me (as style should be) and determined by my body shape, my height, my location and the occasion. The Virgo’s Lounge Renata dress is exactly my style. The draped back is my kind of understated drama and the v-neckline shows just the right amount of skin. VL’s trademark wrap slit opens up with every stride breaking the sea of glitzy blue to show off (freshly shaved) legs!!!

The VL Renata is my dream right now, I wish I was a June baby so I’d have a justifiable reason to purchase it….

Plum and Sapphire

Carina: The Lady Biba ‘Carina’ is one of my favourite dresses in my wardrobe. I bought it in an instagram sale couple of months back, but struggled a little (more like a LOT) with the fit mainly because my lower half and upper half vary drastically! Naturally, I had to have alterations done (thanks to Alterations on Awolowo Road) now my dress is a perfect fit… a second skin if you like.

Initially, I was very skeptical about the Carina. The picture I’d seen on the website featured a poorly finished hemline and although I LOVED the dress, I wasn’t about to throw my money into the pocket of any designer that didn’t pay attention to a clean finish. But then as I went through the Lady Biba instagram account, I noticed that unlike the pictures on the website, the dress actually looked well made. As you all know, I’m a fan of Nigerian Belle and even she vouched for Lady Biba, so I took the plunge and bought the dress. Needless to say, I think this dress is amazing and Lady Biba will definitely be hearing from me again soon.

Vintage: Sumbo’s dress on the other hand is a vintage extraordinaire! This blue number was spotted in her Aunt’s closet and needless to say, it’s Sumbo’s now. A truly timeless piece the colour pops just as much as it did back in the day, but the material has a fragile stretch to it, demanding care when washing.

Miss Rigidaine

I hate Loubs!!!

Christian Louboutin makes some of the most classic and beautiful shoes I will ever see and yet review after review women write of the woes of strutting in the discomfort of the 4-5inch beauties. It’s mental really. You spend c. £500 pounds on well made timeless shoes only to resign your feet to the numbness and inexplicable pain that (they say) is beauty. Why can’t we have it all? Why can’t I have my cake and eat it too damn it?!

Today, I was casually scanning through my emails when I noticed the ‘What’s New’ newsletter circulated by net-a-porter. The most beautiful pair of Louboutins instantly caught my attention and I had to circulate Miss Rigidaine to my team members. We ‘Oohhh-ed’ at the black patent leather pointies and ‘Ahh-ed’ at the clear PVC inserts. The signature red at the inner sides and sole brought life to the modernized D’orsay and the ‘Don’t Mess With Me’ 5 inch heels screamed ‘sexy’ in all languages.

As much as I love the beauty that is pain, I can’t bring myself to spend a whopping £595 on one pair of shoes and so I guess I will have to admire this beauty from a distance the hunched back of Notre Dame confined to the size of my wallet as the beautiful gypsy dances in the market square….. *sigh*

Roosevelt, Prince Charming

I was in Grenoble last October when I spotted a Cambridge Satchel on my fellow nappy lover Esione of Beautifully Nappy. This was by no means the first time I’d set eyes on a Cambridge Satchel but it was the first time that I’d REALLY considered owning one.

The Cambridge satchel is very well put together. He exudes a dapper radiance and preppy character. With his matte finish and clean cut, he woos with his every stride. Primed with a subdued elegance, it’s impossible to imitate the snobbish character of the Cambridge Satchel and resultantly, I purchased one.

I call my Cambridge Satchel Roosevelt simply because it strikes me as a polished, well spoken gentleman with a bit of a hidden agenda. FDR maybe? I can’t say really. He reminds me of Chuck Bass only he’s rich in oxblood as opposed to the sheen of patent leather. Roosevelt has become my everyday Prince Charming. He was well worth every penny!

Eugene

Remember my post The Spider King’s Daughter? Well, lo and behold, I spotted the object of my desire at Terra Kulture last Tuesday and just HAD to buy. I was going to give her a Nigerian name seeing as she’s the Nigerian interpretation of the Pandora, but Taiwo classed that too cliche and so we went with Eugene. Uncommon yet precious.

No. She’s no Charlotte Olympia, but she sure as hell will do! Hope you like as much as I do.

Twenty Thirteen

It’s New Year’s Eve and so it’s no surprise that I’m reflecting on 2013 and optimistic about 2014 and it’s supposed prospects. This year alone, 2 yes TWO of my 4 sisters got engaged!!! All of a sudden life seems to have dawned on me as the echoes begin bouncing off the walls and the space turns claustrophobic. But I’ve decided to leave this rant for 2014 when the weddings are scheduled to hold sealing the deal on it all.

In the mean time, I will focus on the core of my blog and take you through the style that dominated my 2013 wardrobe. Incontestably, this has got to be the ‘Oleku’. For the none Nigerians out there, the ‘Oleku’ is a revised version of the traditional Yoruba attire the ‘Iro and Buba’. It’s a short sleeved blouse/buba accompanied by a wrapper and with the modernisation of the Oleku, Ejiro Amos Tafiri has launched the twist wrap which I was totally crazy about this year. Below are a few pictures for your viewing pleasure…….

In addition to my Oleku phase, I fell head over heels in love with my afro and had it out for a record 4weeks!!!! Yep, it truly has been an amazing year for me and the ‘fro. Below are some pictures, do indulge…….
