‘Zibah Couture

It’s no surprise that I’m always on the hunt for new Nigerian labels. I just can’t understand why Nigerians find it so hard to support our economy and shop Nigerian. Having said that, with the excessive rent, demanding tailors and ridiculous expectations, Nigerian brands tend to be overpriced taking us back to square one, shopping abroad. At the end of the day let’s face it, if the H&M’s and Primarks of this world are cheaper and execute a cleaner finish, why would anyone shop Nigerian? Well, I guess we’ll have to weather the storm if ever we’re going to see the rainbow and for this reason, I will support Nigerian fashion as far as my wallet will stretch me.

My latest Nigerian discovery is called ‘Zibah Couture. ‘Zibah Couture is a friend of mine, Andie and her brother, Charles’, label and it’s the diffusion line from their Mum’s label, Hephzibah Couture. I was invited for their launch in May and got the chance to examine creativity from a fresh point of view. To sum it all up in a simple paragraph, I’d describe ‘Zibah Couture as a subtle twang on early Versace with an appreciation of African print.

Maju

I’ve never had the largest collection of bags notwithstanding; I’ve always been the biggest fan. It could be leather or raffia; an envelope clutch or a chain-strapped satchel; and it could be handmade or machine manufactured. I really didn’t care, as long as it was a bag; there was a good chance that it would tickle my fancy.

Recently, I was invited to the launch of Maju bags at Chase Mall, VI and for a person as well disciplined as I am; it was a shock that resistance played no role in my subconscious. I attended the opening with Taiwo (now that is a shock in itself) and neither one of us left empty handed.

The store was ridiculously small but you know what they say, “Good things come in small packages” and this was no different. Every square inch of the tiny store was occupied with beautifully handcrafted bags and being the patriot I am, I was proud to find this in Nigeria.

I simply remember my favourite things…

Call me weird (only if you must), but there are a few items I own that always seem to fix a smile on my face. Most of these consist of my bag contents and I’m beginning to wonder if it’s a subconscious act of carrying ‘a ray of sunshine’ with me wherever I go.

Vaseline ‘Creme Brule’: What can I say….. it’s Limited Edition!

L’Occitane cherry blossom hand cream: It’s my delicate heaven only it’s in a tube.

Mint Green Barry M nail polish: It draws a subtle type of attention, the kind I’m all about.

Gucci Guilty: That scent is a post for another day. It makes me smell like a million bucks!

Tea forte: Are you pronouncing it correctly? If you are you’ll have the smile I’m talking about…. the twinkle in your eye. *FYI I don’t even drink tea. Lol*

Primark across the body bag: It looks expensive, except it was only £6!!!!

Accessorize necklace: That necklace makes rags feel like gold.

MAC mascara: I ran out of mascara in December and my Mum got me this tube. It made my month!

Ps: I’m heart broken by the Dana plane crash of the 3rd of June, 2012. I cannot believe that planes still crash in 2012. RIP to those that lost their lives. May their souls rest in perfect peace.

Funlayo Deri: Into The Contrast

Funlayo Deri’s ‘into the contrast’ is unquestionably one of my favourite collections this season. My preppy state of mind is very much aligned with her well constructed structures and the dream-like flows in a number of her modishly beautiful pieces hint at a level of grace I’ve only ever dreamed of. Each strip of material is delicately assembled in line with the art of architecture. Here’s the press release on the wisely themed ‘into the contrast’:

“Inspiration for the Funlayo Deri Spring/Summer 2012 collection comes from contemporary architectural structures. Elements of rigid, edgy structures were combined, then transformed to softer, fluid lines and placed in ways which complement the female form. The juxtaposition of different silhouettes, structures, fabrics and textures was used to enhance the clarity of each design.”
